Bullitt Central High School

9/19 Cougar News

Cougar News is Bullitt Centralโ€™s weekly newsletter with important updates, upcoming dates, and celebrations for our students, families, and community.
Legacy Builders

Our theme this year is โ€œBuild The Legacy.โ€ Each week, we are proud to spotlight students in our newsletter who are leaving their mark as true "Legacy Builders"โ€”making a difference in our school and beyond.

These students go above and beyond by showing leadership, serving others, and living out the values that strengthen our Cougar community. Their example reminds us all that building a legacy starts with the choices we make each day.

Important Updates:

๐Ÿ“Š Benchmark Testing Reminder ๐Ÿ“Š

On Tuesday, September 23rd, all 9th and 10th grade students will take their ELA and Math benchmark assessments.

Benchmark assessments are given three times each school year. They provide our school with important formative data to guide instruction and also serve as predictive data for the Kentucky Summative Assessment (KSA) in the spring.

It is very important that students are present and on time for these testing days. Please also remind your student to bring their fully charged Chromebook to school each day.

Thank you for partnering with us to support student success! ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ“š Join the Fun with Beanstack!

We are excited to share that our district has purchased Beanstack, an online reading platform that helps students (and staff!) track their reading, join challenges, and celebrate progress together!

From October 3โ€“December 12, our students will be participating in a schoolwide reading challenge. With extra time in 4th period, weโ€™d love to see our students with books in hand, enjoying reading, and logging their minutes in Beanstack. We would also love to see more students visiting the library and checking out books than ever before!

Why this matters:
Reading regularly not only builds strong literacy skills but also develops focus, creativity, and a love of learning.

Celebrating Success!
Each week, our top readers will be celebrated and recognized on our school social media and in the Cougar Newsletter. Plus, there will be fun incentives for students and staffโ€”more details will be shared soon from Ms. Prasch!

Thank you for encouraging your student to read at home and log their minutes in Beanstack. Together, we can grow a community of readers and make reading fun for everyone!

๐Ÿ”ฌโœจ Transformational Lesson of the Week! โœจ๐Ÿซ€

We are thrilled to recognize Mr. Ryan for our โ€œTransformational Lesson of the Week!โ€

Transformational learning happens when a regular lesson becomes something much more through small, intentional shifts:
โœ”๏ธ Personal โ€“ connecting learning to studentsโ€™ interests and real-life experiences
โœ”๏ธ Learner-led & owned โ€“ giving students voice, choice, and responsibility
โœ”๏ธ Real-world โ€“ showing how classroom concepts apply beyond school
โœ”๏ธ Collaborative โ€“ encouraging students to problem-solve, create, and explore together

This week, Mr. Ryan brought these elements to life across multiple classes:

๐Ÿ’‰ Anatomy & Physiology

  • ๐Ÿ– Chalk Diagrams โ€“ Students created large-scale diagrams of the heart outside, tracing the flow of blood step by step in a fun, interactive way.

  • ๐ŸŽจ 3-D Heart Models โ€“ Using Play-Doh, students built and labeled hearts, reinforcing structure and function through tactile, hands-on learning.

  • ๐Ÿ’“ Heart Rate Investigation โ€“ Students measured and compared their own resting and exercise heart rates, discovering how their bodies respond to activity and making a direct, personal connection to science.

๐Ÿงช Biology

  • ๐Ÿ”ฌ Microscope Examination โ€“ Alongside Mr. Ocasio, students compared plant cells (onion) with animal cells (cheek) under the microscope, observing key differences up close.

  • ๐Ÿซง Cell Membrane Bubble Lab โ€“ Students used bubbles to model the structure and function of cell membranes, exploring concepts like flexibility, selective permeability, and repair.

๐Ÿ‘ Thank you, Mr. Ryan, for inspiring our Cougars and showing us what transformational learning looks like in action!
